Best Crops to Grow in Kenya by Region
When you know what to plant, when and where, farming can be very rewarding, especially in a country like Kenya where different regions have different climates. This means that different crops thrive best in certain areas. Whether you're growing food for your family or for business, this guide will help you pick the best crops for your region and season.
Central Kenya
If you live in areas like Murang’a, Nyeri, or Kiambu, your land is perfect for crops like tea and coffee. These have been the main cash crops here for years, and for good reason. The cool climate and fertile soils make Central Kenya one of the best places for high-quality produce.
But you don’t have to stick to tea and coffee alone. Vegetables like sukuma wiki, spinach, and cucumbers grow very well here. These crops are quick to mature and always in demand, making them a great option for kitchen gardens or small-scale farming to supply local markets and households.
Rift Valley
Rift Valley is the heart of maize and wheat farming in Kenya. Areas like Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, and Trans Nzoia have plenty of rainfall and fertile soils, which are perfect for these staple crops. Maize, in particular, is a favorite for many farmers because it is easy to grow and can be used at home or sold in markets.
If you have a smaller farm, intercropping maize with beans can give you more harvests and improve your soil at the same time. During drier months, crops like sorghum and millet also do well and can help keep your family fed.
Eastern Kenya
The hot and dry conditions in Eastern Kenya—places like Makueni, Machakos, and Kitui—are ideal for fruits and legumes. Mangoes, especially varieties like Tommy Atkins and Apple, thrive here and are a great source of income. Mango farming is growing fast because these fruits are loved in Kenya and even exported to other countries.
Green grams (ndengu) are another smart choice. They grow fast, use little water, and fetch good prices in markets. Many farmers also mix green grams with other crops like cowpeas to make the most of their land.
Western Kenya
Western Kenya, especially Kakamega, Bungoma, and Busia, is well-known for sugarcane farming. Sugarcane takes longer to grow, but the returns can be worth it. For smaller farms, sweet potatoes are an excellent option. They are easy to grow, need little care, and are very nutritious.
In areas like Kisii and Vihiga, sweet potatoes grow well even with unpredictable rains. With a bit of spacing and proper care, you can harvest enough for your family and still have extra to sell.
Arid and Semi-Arid Areas
In drier areas like Garissa, Turkana, and parts of Tana River, you need crops that can survive with little rain. Sorghum and millet are your best bet. These crops are drought-resistant, and they provide food for your family even when other crops fail.
Watermelons also grow well here, especially during short rains. If you time your planting right, you can sell watermelons at a good price during the dry season when demand is high.
