Overview

The size most smallholders settle on. Five litres of mix covers a decent run of kales, tomatoes or beans before you have to walk back to the water, and it is still a load you can carry the length of a shamba without swapping hands every few metres.

Pump the handle, and the air above the liquid does the work until the pressure falls off. Working pressure is 2.5 to 3 bar, enough to atomise properly so the spray settles as a film on the leaf rather than running off in drops. The nozzle adjusts, so you can go from a wide cone for foliar feeding to a tighter jet for spot treating a thistle or getting up into a hedge. A relief valve vents the tank if you keep pumping past the working pressure, and the translucent wall shows exactly how much mix is left.

Questions and answers

How much does a full one weigh to carry?
The sprayer is 1.1kg empty and five litres of mix adds five kilos, so a full tank is a real load on a long row. Half fill it if you are working in heat.
Does the spray pattern change?
Yes. The nozzle adjusts from a wide cone for covering foliage to a narrower jet for spot treating and for reaching into a hedge.
