Overview
An air compressor pump runs metal on metal at speed and gets hot doing it. The oil in the crankcase is what keeps the piston, the cylinder and the bearings apart. Run it low or run it on the wrong oil and the pump seizes, and a seized pump usually costs more than the compressor is worth.
Compressor oil is not engine oil. Engine oil contains detergents and additives meant to deal with combustion products, and in a compressor those additives foam, carry over into the air line and end up on whatever you are spraying or blowing clean. Compressor oil is formulated to resist foaming and to stay stable at the temperature a pump reaches. This is a one litre bottle, which is a top up and refill quantity for a small workshop or site compressor rather than a drum for a fleet. It is the size worth keeping on the shelf next to the machine, because the oil check that gets skipped is the one that needs a trip to town first.

Can I use engine oil instead?
Not advisable. Engine oil has detergents that foam in a compressor and carry over into the air line onto your work.
How often should I check the level?
Before every session. A compressor that has lost oil gives no warning until the pump has already been damaged.
