Overview
A Dehorning Iron is a livestock management tool used to safely remove or prevent the growth of horns in young animals such as calves, goats, and sheep. The iron heats up and is applied to the horn bud area, destroying the horn-producing cells. This prevents horn growth and reduces the risk of injuries among animals and handlers.
They are commonly used on farms and ranches because they provide a quick, controlled, and effective method of dehorning. Most models are electrically heated and designed with a durable metal tip that reaches the proper temperature for efficient horn bud removal.
It consist of a metal rod with a circular or cup-shaped heated tip attached to an insulated handle. The tip is heated either by electricity, gas, or an external flame. Once the tool reaches the required temperature, it is pressed firmly against the horn bud. The heat cauterizes the surrounding tissue and cuts off the blood supply to the horn-producing cells, preventing the horn from growing.
