Overview

Twenty metres is the length most people end up wanting. Fifteen gets you across a room, twenty gets you from the socket in the house to the gate, the store, the water tank or the corner of the plot where the work actually is.

It is built for 220V at 10 amps on 2mm conductors, which is the ordinary working range for drills, grinders, small pumps, lights and chargers. Conductor size matters more as the lead gets longer, because every extra metre adds resistance and a thin cable turns that resistance into heat and lost voltage at the tool. At 1.0kg the cord is still light enough to carry coiled over an arm, and it is worth keeping it on a nail or a hook rather than in a heap, since most extension leads die from being driven over or pinched in a door rather than from electrical wear.

Questions and answers

Is 20 metres enough to reach the back of a plot?
It covers most compounds from a house socket to a gate, a store or a water tank. Measure the run first, since a lead that is a little short is no use at all.
Can I plug a welder into it?
No. It is rated for 220V at 10 amps. A welder draws well beyond that and needs a supply and a lead sized for it.
