Overview

A non-contact tester finds live wiring without touching a conductor. You hold the tip near a cable, a socket, a light fitting, a junction box or a flex, and it signals if there is alternating voltage present. That is how you check a lead before cutting it, find which of two cables in a ceiling is the live one, or trace a break along a power cord that has been trodden on.

It reads from 12 to 600 volts alternating, which covers household and commercial wiring. The sensitivity is adjustable, which is what makes the tool usable rather than frustrating. Turned down, it only picks up a conductor close to the tip, so you can single out one wire in a bundle. Turned up, it finds a break in insulated cable or a live core behind a wall finish. Indication is both visible and audible, so it works on a noisy site and in a dark ceiling void. It runs on two AAA batteries, it is 0.12kg with a pocket clip, and it lives in a shirt pocket or a tool pouch rather than a box.

How does it work without touching the wire?
It senses the electric field around a live alternating current conductor, so it signals through insulation without a probe touching metal.
Can I use it to prove a circuit is dead?
No. Use it to find live wiring, then isolate the circuit and confirm it is dead with a two pole tester before working on it.
