Overview

The hand tool that does most of the work in a kitchen garden. You dig the hole for a seedling with it, backfill and firm the soil around the stem, fill pots and seed trays with it, and lift small plants out with enough soil around the roots that they do not check when they are moved.

It suits a nursery bed, a row of sukuma or tomatoes, a flower border and anything grown in containers, where a spade cannot get in. The blade shape is what matters: it cuts into loose soil, holds a scoop of it, and lets you place it exactly where you want rather than spreading it about. On a compound this is also the tool used for planting bulbs and shrubs, mixing manure into a planting hole and digging out individual weeds that have taken hold in gravel or between pavers.

Questions and answers

What is it best used for?
Digging planting holes, backfilling and firming soil around seedlings, filling pots and trays, and lifting small plants with their soil.
Why do trowels bend?
Almost always from levering, or from forcing the blade into hard dry ground. Soften the bed with water or break it with a fork first and the trowel will last.
How do I order and receive it?
Place your order online and we will call you to confirm the item, the price and the delivery. You can collect it from our shop on Moi Avenue in Nairobi CBD or we can send it by courier.
