Overview
A rain gauge tells you how much rain fell on your ground, which is not the same as how much rain you think fell. A short heavy shower looks like a lot and delivers little. A quiet drizzle through the night can deliver more than a storm. On a shamba that difference decides whether you irrigate in the morning or leave the crop alone.
It is a simple instrument and that is the point. You push it into the ground or fix it to a post in the open, read the scale after rain, write the figure down and empty it. Over a season those figures show you when your rains actually start and stop on your own plot, which is often several days away from what is reported for the region. Farmers use the record to time planting, to decide when to top dress, and to argue less about whether the maize needs water. For a kitchen garden it stops the most common mistake, which is watering a bed that is already wet below the surface.
