Overview

This is a full size panel for a permanent installation rather than a portable one. Panels of this class are what go on a house roof, a workshop roof, a borehole pump array or a farm installation, wired in strings into a charge controller or a hybrid inverter. Four hundred and fifty watts is at the upper end of what a single panel produces, so fewer panels, fewer mounting rails and fewer connections are needed for a given system size.

Panel output is rated under test conditions, and in the field the number you see depends on sun, temperature, dust and shade. Shade is the one that surprises people. A single branch or a water tank shadow crossing one panel can pull down a whole string, which is why the position of an array matters as much as the size of it. Dust matters too. In a dry season a panel that is never washed loses a real share of its output to the film on the glass, and washing it is a few minutes of work that pays for itself. Panels are also the part of a solar system that lasts longest. The inverter and the battery will be replaced long before the panels are.
