Overview

A builder's line for setting out block work. You stretch it between two profiles or corner blocks and lay every course to it, so the wall runs straight and level instead of drifting as it goes up. Any mason building in stone or block uses one on every job.

This is the 0.85mm gauge, the thinnest of the three Ryobi lines. Gauge matters more than it sounds. A thin line slips easily through a line block and sits closer to the face of the stone, so the course you lay against it is truer. A thicker line takes rougher handling over a long run. Fundis normally keep more than one gauge in the bag and pick by the length of the run. The same line is used for setting out foundations, squaring a slab, aligning fence posts and levelling a paved path.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between the gauges?
Thickness only. The 0.85mm is the thinnest and sits closest to the face of the work. The 0.90mm and 1.00mm are heavier and stand up better to a long run and rough handling.
Can I use it for setting out a foundation?
Yes. It is used for foundations, squaring slabs, fence lines and paving, anywhere you need a straight datum to work to.
