Overview

The line a mason stretches between profiles or corner blocks so every course is laid to the same straight, level datum. Without one, a wall wanders within a few courses and you only see it once the render goes on.

This is the 0.90mm gauge, the middle weight of the three. It is the one most fundis reach for on general work. It still threads through a line block without fuss, but it has a little more body than the 0.85mm, so it takes being pulled tight over a longer run and survives a day of being dragged across blockwork. Apart from walling, it is used for setting out foundations, squaring a slab before casting, running a fence line and levelling paving.

Questions and answers

Which gauge should I buy?
The 0.90mm is the general purpose choice. Take the 0.85mm if you want the thinnest line against the face of the work, or the 1.00mm for long runs and rough handling.
Does it stretch?
Any building line gives a little under a hard pull. Set it, check it with a level at both ends, and re-tension it when you move the profiles.
