Overview

An impact driver is the tool that drives long screws into hard timber without wrecking your wrist or the screw head. Instead of steady turning, it delivers rapid rotational blows, so the fastener keeps moving when a drill driver would stall and twist the tool out of your hand. On a roof, a fence line, a deck, a timber frame or a run of chipboard flooring, this is the difference between a morning and a day.

One hundred and fifty newton metres is serious torque for a handheld tool, and it is delivered through a 6.35mm hex holder rather than a chuck. Bits push in and click home in one movement with no jaws to tighten, which is what you want when you are changing between a driver bit and a hex socket up a ladder. The trigger runs from zero to 2 200 revolutions a minute, so you can start a screw slowly and then lean on it. The lock on button and the shaped handle help on long runs of the same fixing. At 1.1kg the tool stays manageable overhead.

Does it come with a battery?
No. The battery and the charger are sold separately. It runs on an 18V lithium-ion pack from the same cordless range.
What bits does it take?
Bits with a 6.35mm hex shank. Use impact rated bits, because ordinary driver bits break under the hammering action.
