Overview
A 12mm bit for the largest common fixings and for holes that carry something through a wall: a conduit, a cable, a through bolt, a heavy anchor.
A multi-purpose bit is what you reach for when the hole has to pass through more than one thing. A shelf bracket on a plastered wall, a bracket through a tile into blockwork, a fixing through timber into mortar: with an ordinary bit you stop and change tools halfway through, and the second bit wanders off the line the first one started. The other reason to keep a few sizes in the box is that a bit is the cheapest part of any fixing job and the one that decides whether the plug holds. A hole drilled with a blunt bit or the wrong size comes out oversize, and no amount of filler makes that fixing solid again.

Questions and answers
Will my drill handle a 12mm bit?
Check the chuck capacity first. Many light drills take up to 10mm or 13mm, and a 12mm hole also needs a drill with enough torque at low speed.
Does it need a hammer drill?
No. A multi-purpose bit is meant to be used in rotary mode. Hammer action is for a masonry bit in hard concrete.
