Overview

A plunge saw on a rail is how you cut a sheet straight without a table saw. Lay the rail on the board, set the depth, drop the blade into the cut and push. The line is exactly where the rail edge is, so cutting a kitchen worktop, breaking down a full sheet of ply or MDF, trimming a fitted door or squaring a chipboard floor comes out straight the first time.

The blade sits inside the body until you plunge it, which is what lets you start a cut in the middle of a panel rather than at an edge. That is how you cut an opening for a sink or a hob, or work up against a wall, since the saw cuts to within 15mm of a closed wall and is used for shadow gaps and expansion joints. Depth is adjustable from zero to 56mm, which is 52mm when the saw is riding on the track, so the blade can be set to cut a panel without scoring what is under it. The blade tilts for mitre cuts, there is a cutting line indicator, and the rail carries a splinter guard so the top face does not chip. A dust extraction tube takes the waste to a vacuum instead of into the room.
