Petrol frees you from the socket and the lead. For a compound lawn away from the house, a plot, a school field or a church ground, a petrol mower goes wherever the grass is and keeps cutting without anybody watching a cable. It is also the answer when the grass has got away from you and an electric machine would simply stall.

The 125cc four-stroke engine runs at 2 800rpm and drives a 410mm blade inside a rigid steel deck. A steel deck takes the knocks that a plastic one does not, which counts on rough ground with stones and tree roots. Cutting height adjusts through seven positions from 20 to 70mm using one central lever, so you can drop it for a fine finish or raise it to top long grass without lifting each wheel separately. The 45 litre plastic catcher takes a good quantity before it needs emptying, and the wheels run on steel bearings.
