Overview
A sheet orbital sander is the basic finishing machine, and this size covers a lot of surface for a light tool. The long rectangular pad at 90 by 240mm suits doors, table tops, shelves, window frames, skirtings and wall panelling, and the square corners let it work right up to an edge where a round pad leaves an unsanded strip.
Twelve thousand orbits a minute is quick, and on a flat surface it produces an even finish ready for paint or varnish. The paper is an ordinary sheet held in quick action clamps at each end, which keeps the running cost down to the price of sandpaper and means you can cut whatever grit you have to size. Changing the paper takes seconds, which matters because a worn sheet polishes instead of cutting and most people leave it on far too long. The on and off lock lets you run continuously without holding the switch, and a dust collection bag comes with it. At 1.7kg it is light enough to use one handed on a vertical surface.

What size sanding sheet does it take?
A 90 by 240mm sheet, held by quick action clamps at each end. You can cut ordinary sandpaper to size rather than buying special discs.
Is it good enough for a varnished finish?
For most work yes, but a plain orbital sander can leave faint swirls. Finish by hand along the grain with fine paper before a clear gloss coat.
