A roller sander works with drums and wheels instead of a flat pad, so it follows shapes rather than flattening them. That makes it the tool for balusters, spindles, chair legs, curved mouldings, window bars, wrought iron gates and railings, and the inside of curves where a sheet sander only touches the high points.
