Overview
A cordless chainsaw with a 10 inch bar, for firewood, pruning and clearing on a plot where a cable is a problem. There is no fuel to mix and no starting routine. You fit a charged battery and pull the trigger, which suits a saw that is used in short bursts through the week rather than all day.
The 254mm guide bar handles branches and small trunks in one pass, and the chain runs at 6 metres a second. Chain tension is set by hand without tools, which matters because a new chain stretches in its first hour and most people will not stop to hunt for a spanner. The oiler is automatic and feeds from a 180ml tank, the largest of the cordless saws in this range. The chain brake is mechanical and patented. The saw weighs 3.5kg before a battery goes on.

Questions and answers
Which battery does it take?
The XB-4000 or XB-6000, charged on the XPP-2700. Neither the battery nor the charger is included with the saw.
How does it compare with the brushless model?
The brushless saw runs a faster chain at 10 m/s and gives more run time from the same battery. This one is the simpler and less expensive machine with a larger 180ml oil tank.
