Overview

Trimming line is the part of a grass trimmer that actually does the cutting, and it is the part that runs out. Every time you touch a wall, a kerb, a fence post or a stone the line wears back, and on a rough compound that happens far faster than on a lawn. This is a single 8 metre loop of 1.6mm line, the size most small electric trimmers are built around.

Diameter is the spec that matters. Too thin and the line snaps as soon as it meets thick stems or a wall. Too thick and it will not feed through the eyelets of the head, or it loads the motor until the trimmer slows and overheats. The machine handbook gives the size it is designed for, and 1.6mm is the usual answer for domestic electric trimmers of a few hundred watts. Eight metres is enough to fill a small spool and leave a little over, which makes this the loop to keep in the store for the afternoon the line finally gives out halfway round the compound.
