Overview

A belt sander is the tool for taking material off, not for finishing. Levelling a glued up table top, flattening a door that has swollen, stripping old varnish or paint off a floor or a bench, cleaning up rough sawn timber, taking the high spots out of a worktop. It removes wood far faster than an orbital sander, which is both the reason to own one and the reason to respect it.

At 1 200 Watts this is an industrial size machine with a wide 100 by 610mm belt, so it covers ground quickly and does not bog down in hardwood. The six level speed control is more useful than it sounds. Run slow for paint, which melts and clogs a belt at speed, and run fast for bare timber where you want stock off. A lock on switch means you are not holding a trigger for an hour, and the swivel ball cord bushing stops the cable wrapping itself around the machine as you work back and forth. Dust extraction is built in and a dust bag is supplied. The brush caps are on the outside, so carbon brushes can be changed without opening the body.

What sort of work is it for?
Heavy stock removal. Levelling glued up tops, flattening doors, stripping paint and varnish, and cleaning up rough sawn timber.
Why does it have six speeds?
Slow speeds suit paint and varnish, which melt and clog a belt when run fast. High speeds suit bare timber where you want material off quickly.
