Overview

An orbital sander is a finishing tool. Where a belt sander takes material off, this one smooths what is already flat, which is the stage between the joinery and the paint. Preparing a door or a window frame for varnish, rubbing down filler, flattening a coat of primer, cleaning up a repaired surface, taking the fur off sawn timber before it is painted. It is the machine that decides how the finished work feels under a hand.

The 90 by 182mm pad takes a piece cut from an ordinary sheet of sandpaper, held by quick action clamps, so there is no special disc to buy and a sheet costs very little. The 1.6mm orbit is small, and a small orbit is what leaves a fine scratch pattern rather than swirl marks that show through a gloss finish. Eleven thousand five hundred orbits a minute keeps that pattern tight. At 1.35kg it can be worked one handed on a vertical surface or held above your head on a ceiling board without your shoulder giving out after ten minutes. A dust port lets you connect an extractor.

Questions and answers

Does it use special sanding paper?
No. It takes cut pieces of ordinary sheet sandpaper, held by quick action clamps, which keeps the running cost low.
Can it strip paint?
Not well. It is a finishing sander for smoothing and preparing surfaces. Stripping thick paint is work for a belt sander or a heat gun.
