Overview

A bench grinder is the machine that keeps everything else cutting. Chisels, plane irons, drill bits, axes, pangas, scissors, knives, lawnmower blades and jembe edges all lose their edge, and a blunt tool is slower and more dangerous than a sharp one. This unit puts a grinding wheel and a sanding belt on one motor, so you can take the nick out on the wheel and then work the edge back on the belt.

It is fitted with one fine and one coarse grinding wheel. The coarse one is for reshaping a chipped or badly worn edge, and the fine one for bringing it back to a working edge without burning it. The 50 by 686mm belt gives a flat surface that suits blades and flat tools, where a round wheel leaves a hollow. Fully adjustable tool rests are the part that decides whether you grind an angle or ruin one, because a rest set properly lets you present the same bevel every time. At 2 980 revolutions a minute the wheel works quickly, which is also why small tools get hot fast.

Questions and answers

What can I sharpen on it?
Chisels, plane irons, drill bits, axes, pangas, scissors, knives and lawnmower blades. A coarse and a fine wheel are fitted for shaping and finishing.
Why does my chisel turn blue?
It is overheating. Grind in short touches and dip the tool in water between them, because a blue edge has lost its hardness permanently.
