Overview

This is the largest engine in the mower range, and the reason to choose it over the 170cc machine of the same cutting width is grass that fights back. Thick kikuyu, damp growth after rain, a lawn that has been left three weeks: these are the conditions where a smaller engine slows, the cut goes ragged and you end up making two passes.

The 190cc four-stroke OHV engine runs at 2 900rpm through a 480mm rigid steel deck. Four individual swing blades do the cutting. Swing blades are hinged, so when one meets a stone or a root it folds back rather than transmitting the shock straight into the crankshaft, which is the fault that ends a mower's life. Cutting height is set with one lever through eight positions at 20, 25, 35, 40, 50, 55, 65 and 75mm. The 60 litre catcher takes a good load, which matters because a 480mm cut fills a small box very quickly.

Questions and answers

How is it different from the 170cc mower?
Same 480mm cutting width, but a larger 190cc engine. The extra engine size helps in thick or damp grass where a smaller one slows down.
Does it take mixed fuel?
No. It is a four-stroke, so straight petrol goes in the tank and engine oil goes in the sump as a separate item.
