Overview
Two loops of 2.0mm line at eight metres each. This is the gauge for the machine that has to deal with more than a lawn: the grass that comes up waist high behind the house during the rains, the rough strip along a boundary, the ground under a hedge that has not been touched for a month.
Heavier line does two things. It keeps cutting in thick stemmed growth where a fine line stalls and wraps, and it survives more contact with walls, posts and stones before it wears back into the head. What it costs you is power. The motor has to swing a heavier line through denser material, so a machine specified for a thinner gauge will slow down, get hot and eventually fail. Fit 2mm only where the handbook says 2mm. With two loops in the pack you can load one and keep the second for the middle of the next job, which is when line always goes.

When should I move up to 2mm?
When the grass is thick stemmed and a lighter line keeps breaking, and only if your machine is rated for 2mm line.
Does heavier line cut faster?
In heavy growth, yes, because it holds its shape instead of folding. In soft lawn grass it makes little difference and uses more power.
