Overview

A jigsaw is the saw for cutting a shape rather than a line. A hole in a worktop for a sink, a curve on a shelf end, a cut out in a panel for a socket, a scalloped edge, a repair patch in a floor board. It starts a cut in the middle of a board, follows a curve, and cuts close up against an obstruction, which no other portable saw does.

This is the light duty size at 400 Watts, running at 3 000 strokes a minute and cutting up to 55mm in wood. That covers board, ply, softwood and most of what a household or a light workshop cuts. The base adjusts for bevel cutting, so an angled edge is cut on the saw. The built in dust blower is more useful than its name suggests, because it keeps the sawdust off the pencil line and a line you can see is a line you can follow. A lock on button saves holding the trigger on a long cut. At 1.4kg it can be used one handed on a vertical panel while the other hand steadies the work.

Questions and answers

How thick can it cut?
Up to 55mm in wood. For the thicker end of that range use a fresh blade, because a bent blade leaves the underside out of square.
Can it start a cut in the middle of a board?
Yes, by drilling a starter hole and dropping the blade in. That is the usual way of cutting a sink opening or a socket cut out.
