Overview

The largest corded impact drill in this range. The extra power over the 650W and 710W models shows in the jobs that load a drill rather than in the easy ones: mixing a bucket of tile adhesive, running a 30mm auger through hardwood, and drilling a long series of holes in block without the motor getting hot and slow.

The impact action hammers while the bit turns, which is how a masonry bit works its way into block. Variable speed on the trigger keeps a hole on the mark when you start it, and the lock-on button holds the trigger for continuous work. Reverse backs out a jammed bit and also lets the tool be used for removing screws. The depth control gauge sets a stop so repeated blind holes come out to the same depth. The chuck is 13mm heavy duty, and the tool weighs 2.24kg, which is a little more than the smaller drills and is felt overhead.

Questions and answers

Which of the three impact drills should I buy?
The 850W for mixing and long runs of holes, the 710W as a general drill at 2.0kg, and the 650W for lighter work. All three take a 13mm chuck.
Can it replace a rotary hammer?
Not for concrete. An impact drill vibrates the bit through masonry, while a rotary hammer strikes it. For anchor holes in concrete an SDS-plus machine is far quicker.
