Overview

Bar and chain oil for chainsaws, in a 1 litre bottle. Every chainsaw, mains or petrol, has an oil tank separate from anything else, and it feeds this oil onto the bar while the chain runs. It is not engine oil and it is not two stroke mixing oil. It is a tacky oil made to cling to a chain that is moving at over ten metres a second.

This is the running cost people forget when they buy a saw. A chainsaw empties its oil tank at roughly the same rate as its fuel tank, so on a petrol saw you top up both together. A dry bar shows itself quickly: the chain smokes, the bar rail turns blue at the nose, the chain stretches and then it starts to grab. Replacing a bar and chain costs many times more than keeping oil in the tank. The 1 litre bottle is the size to buy if you cut regularly rather than once a season.

Questions and answers

Can I use engine oil instead?
No. Engine oil is thinner and flies off the chain instead of clinging to it, and used oil carries grit that wears the bar rails. Bar oil is made to stay put.
How fast does a saw use it?
Roughly as fast as it uses fuel. Fill the oil tank every time you fill the fuel tank, and check the bar is getting oil before you start a long cut.
