Overview
Bar and chain oil for chainsaws in a 500ml bottle. This is the small bottle, the one to buy if the saw comes out a few times a year for firewood and storm damage rather than every week. It goes into the oil tank on the saw, which is a separate tank from the petrol on a two stroke machine.
Bar oil is deliberately sticky. A chain moving at speed throws off anything thin, so the oil has to cling long enough to reach the rails and the drive links. That is why engine oil is the wrong answer, and why used engine oil is worse still: it carries grit from the engine it came out of and grinds the bar from the inside. A saw that runs dry tells you within a minute. The chain smokes, the nose of the bar turns blue and the chain begins to stretch and grab.

Questions and answers
Is 500ml enough for a day of cutting?
Usually not. A saw uses bar oil at roughly the same rate as fuel. For a full day, or for clearing a plot, take the 1 litre bottle.
Where does it go on the saw?
Into the oil tank, which has its own filler cap separate from the fuel. On an electric saw it is the only tank. Never put bar oil in the fuel tank.
