Overview
This is the tool you use before the drill, not after. Behind a plastered wall there is usually a conduit, a water pipe or a reinforcing bar somewhere, and the only warning you normally get is a bang, a flash or a wet patch. A detector takes ten seconds and tells you whether the spot you have marked is clear.
It picks up three things: ferrous metal such as steel reinforcement and conduit, non-ferrous metal such as copper pipe and cable, and live wires carrying current. LED warning lights show where drilling is safe rather than making you read a dial while holding the tool against the wall. Calibration is automatic, so you switch it on against the wall and it sets itself, and the only control is on and off. Scan depth is 40mm, which covers plaster and a normal thickness of finish over a block wall. It runs on three LR44 cells, which are included, and at 0.14kg it lives in the same bag as the drill.

Questions and answers
How deep does it scan?
Up to 40mm. Anything buried deeper than that will not register, so treat a clear reading as a guide rather than a guarantee.
Will it find a live cable?
It detects live wires, but only on a circuit that is switched on. A dead cable shows only if it contains metal within the scan depth.
